THE FAR/AIM - Part 1 - The FAR

Tuesday, May 12, 2026 22:37

Welcome to a guide through the FAR/AIM!

Just some insights, and nice things to know about the pilot's bible:

(some of these questions could be asked in a checkride)

This arcticle will discuss the FAR part of the FAR/AIM. Another articel will cover the AIM part.

     What is the FAR?

  •  It's a collection of Aviation related Regulations, the Federal Aviation Regulations.

     Where are those Regulations from?

  • The Regulations in the FAR/AIM are found in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) which contain the Regulations of the United States. The Regulations in the FAR/AIM are located in Parts 14 (Aeronautics and Space) and 49 (Transportation) of the CFR. Part 3 of the CFR for example concerns the office of the President.

Until when is my FAR/AIM current?

  • If you just bought a new one, even if you did so the day it was published, it's going to be outdated already. You can check the currency date on page ii, which is the page right after the cover sheet.
For the FAR/AIM 2011, for example, it states: " This publication contains current regulations as of July 30, 2010. The Aeronautical Information Manual is current through August 26, 2010"

How can I update my FAR/AIM?

  • You can get all the updates to your FAR/AIM via the ASA Homepage.

If I quote out of the FAR/AIM how do I say all those numbers?

  • Let's say the place you're looking at is 91.126 (b) (2) in the FARs.
This would then be 14 CFR 91.126 (b) (2) in the CFR and would be said:
    "Title 14 CFR, Part 91, Section 126, Paragraph (b), Subparagraph (2)"

Bookmarking

I like to go through the FAR/AIM once I get it and update all my bookmarks, highlights and notes and thought it might be interesting to share my list with you guys, so here it is.

While certainly a tedious task I consider doing this manual labeling a great review of the regulations and time well spent.

The list features things all the way from Student Pilot through CFII, so it could be pretty interesting to read.

Of course it's not a complete list, so don't rely on it and of course I invite you to post comments with stuff you bookmarked and I didn't yet.

After spending some time with the FAR/AIM, often times you will know the chapter the information you are looking for and about where to find my information in the chapter. So for newer Students it is a great practice to try to read through the FAR/AIM once to get familiar with it.

The first thing I do is to bookmark all the top-level Sections of the FAR (e.g. 1,43,61,.....,142) to find them faster.

I will then add bookmark individual sections that I often refer to.

I know that some people use the tabs that are printed on the book and are happy with those but I just like the extra comfort of having those bookmarks.

I do the same thing for the AIM.

Ok, let's look at my bookmarks/highlights:
